What Is Vimshottari Dasha?
Vimshottari dasha is a 120-year planetary timing system used in Vedic astrology to divide your life into distinct chapters, each ruled by a different planet. Unlike Western astrology's transits alone, dasha tells you not just what energies are active, but roughly when.
How It's Calculated
Your dasha sequence is fixed at birth, based on the exact position of the Moon in its nakshatra (lunar mansion) at the moment you were born. From there, the full 120-year cycle — mahadashas and antardashas — can be computed with precision.
Dasha is what gives Jyotish its reputation for predicting not just what, but when.
The Nine Planetary Periods
- Ketu — 7 years
- Venus — 20 years
- Sun — 6 years
- Moon — 10 years
- Mars — 7 years
- Rahu — 18 years
- Jupiter — 16 years
- Saturn — 19 years
- Mercury — 17 years
Each mahadasha is further subdivided into antardashas of all nine planets in the same sequence, giving 81 total periods across the full cycle — enough resolution to time events down to a few months.
